More Mudpies to Magnets: Science for Young Children
Published in Paperback by Gryphon House (April, 1991)
Authors: Elizabeth A. Sherwood, Robert A. Williams, Robert E. Rockwell, Roger A. Williams, and Kathy Charner
Average review score:

Fabulous!
We LOVE this book!
The world of quality science books for very young children is sadly lacking. Mudpies to Magnets definitely fills a huge void. The book is detailed, clear, accurate, and age appropriate. Don't think this book is strictly for young children, older ones enjoy it as well. It really helped reinforce concepts in a real, fun way. If your kids are struggling with science or think its 'boring' you definitely need this book.

Great science intro for young kids!
I love this book! It is a great introduction to science for young kids, beginning with pre-school age. Sensible focus on asking questions, observing and measuring phenomena. Uses a child's natural curiosity about the world all around and harnesses it to encourage the systematic thought on which science is based. I will be teaching a science class for my daughter's Montessori class every two weeks and will take many (most?) of my lessons from this book!

Fabulous one-page experiments with good science explanations
This book and the original Mudpies to Magnets are my best choices for simple, one-page science activities. These science books and experiments were clearly written with the parent or teacher in mind. Although the books contain a wealth of knowledge and experiments, none of the material is overwhelming for the adult participant. The experiments themselves require only inexpensive, household materials. And each of the experiments that we have tried are fun. One caveat: Ignore the age rankings as a wide variety of children (up to age 10) can enjoy all the experiments in these books...from The Science Spiders(TM) Newsletter.

The Morning Sickness Companion
Published in Paperback by Griffin Trade Paperback (April, 2003)
Author: Elizabeth Kaledin
Average review score:

I'm a survivor:-)
What a great book!!! I experienced hypermesis during my first pregnancy, and it was truly horible. I couldn't get out of bed for two months. My husband and I are currently planning our second child,( It is worth going through a second time.:-)and admittedly I'm terrified of spending another two months in bed, eating nothing but apples, and ice chips.

This book gave me strength. Just knowing others were feeling, and surviving the same thing. The personal experiences, had me laughing till I cried. And the tips, and medical research information were truly enlightening.

I heartily recommend this book for anyone surviving, or a survivor of "all day sickness".

Truly Helpful
Not just funny (which this is), but truly helpful -- with tips and ideas that are really effective.

Very comforting but also informative.

Definitely a good "Companion" for the Sickie
I have been pregnant 3 times and have been sick every time. Some pregnancies were worse than others. During my last pregnancy I threw up every day, several times a day, until my 20th week. I have a sister who stays sick until delivery. "Morning Sickness" lasts all day for me and feels more like sea sickness and the flu combined. I have read many books available on the subject and have tried many things. It is no laughing matter and can be made worse by the feeling that you are all alone and no one understands your misery.
Elizabeth Kaledin is a woman who knows what she is talking about. She has experienced the wretchedness of morning sickness in her 2 pregnancies. This book covers all the bases, in my opinion, with ideas for relief that cover a wide range. But even more valuable are the "testimonials" from other woman who have experienced sickness. These women candidly share their experiences (most of which I could relate to) as well as what worked or didn't work for them. Some stories were actually amusing, and I enjoyed Ms. Kaledin's candor and warmth. This book will help you realize you are not alone in dealing with this sometimes debilitating ailment and offers compassion and ideas for relief.

Mrs. Wishy-Washy
Published in Hardcover by Philomel Books (May, 1999)
Authors: Joy Cowley and Elizabeth Fuller
Average review score:

An absolute must for any one working with young children.
I first came across this book while student teaching and fell in love instantly. I have used it for many theme units - letter (W), farm unit, and rhyming words unit. I have even made flannel board pieces to go along with the story and put in my literacy centers. My supervising teachers loved the flannel pieces so much they had me make them some also. You children/students will love this book and will in time learn to read it themselves, just as my kindergartners did. GET THIS BOOK :).

Absolutely loved by children, the favorite on the shelf.
Be prepared to read it over and over again. The pre-schoolers laugh and giggle. They love to say "Wishy-Washy" and can't wait til the next page that opens up. A short enough book, even your littlest reader knows the next page.

Ms Wishy-Washy is a delightful book for new readers.
Ms Wishy-Washy is a colorful picture book for new readers. The cow, pig, and duck see the mud, and they wade, roll, and waddle in it. Ms Wishy-Washy then scrubs each animal clean. Then guess what the animals do next?

The book presents one word change per page and gives the new reader enough repetitions so that the reader learns the repeated words. The illustrations are marvelous. Children love this book, but so do adults.

Best Muffin Book Ever!
I have made almost every muffin recipe in this book and every one was a hit with many guests over several years! If you buy only one muffin book, this should be it!

The BEST Muffin Book Ever!
I absolutely LOVE this book, and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys baking. The great variety of recipes turn out perfectly every time. I especially love the recipes for muffins with a surprise inside. If you want a book that will please you every time you use it, and you WILL use it often, then buy this book.

this is the most-used cookbook I own
I was given this book as a gift the year it was published, and I use it more than any other cookbook I own. The offerings range from smoked turkey muffins (excellent as an hors doeurves in miniature) to our all-time favorite, pumpkin chocolate chip muffins. Also includes excellent basic muffin baking information. Highly recommended.

My Brown Bear Barney
Published in Hardcover by Greenwillow (August, 1989)
Authors: Dorothy Butler and Elizabeth Fuller
Average review score:

Preschoolers love this book!
As a preschool teacher, I look for books that actively engage young children and are able to pull them in to the story. This book certainly does that. Children quickly pick up the rhythym of the story. They relate to the characters. In our preschool, we have a teddy bear that we send home with the children, along with a copy of the book. The children love to be able to "read" the story to their family. They then "write" a story about the bear's adventure while at their home. This book is a perfect link for this activity. Parents and children alike love this story. Thank you Dorothy Butler for a wonderful story!

delightful book for the very young
My almost-two-year-old really enjoys this book. The pictures are very bright and colorful, the situations familiar. The different "lists" for each scenario are engagingly highlighted, and each list is made up from a master group, stimulating young minds to remember what has been used more than once, and in what situations. The pictures of each activity also can serve as a kind of "where's waldo?" game, where your child can find the brown bear. Very lyrical sound, pleasant to read, which is good, because in my house, its requested more than once.

First steps in reading.
This book was reviewed in a graduate course in reading that I was taking. My Brown Bear Barney is a predictable print book. Such books are excellent in the very early stages of reading. Children memorize the book as you read it over and over and over again. Repetition the very thing our adult mind questions, children ask for repetition that they need. They learn to "read" you the book even when the book is not there. This stage of memorization is the first stage of reading. The child then moves to recognizing the words. For example, "Is this word 'bear'?" So both kindergarten teachers and parents can use this book. It is good to have a half dozen of these predictable print books at home. (Look up: Sue William "I Went Walking".)

New Hope for People with Borderline Personality Disorder: Your Friendly, Authoritative Guide to the Latest in Traditional and Complementary Solutions

Wonderful
One of the most comprehensive and enlightening books on the subject!

Best Book on BPD Out There for Consumers & Familes! Bravo!
I own the site BPD Today and have kept up with all of the BPD books that have come out. I just finished this book and I'm not only pleased, I'm stunned!
This book discusses EVERYTHING a consumer would want to know and more. Easy to read. Filled with knowledge about what BPD is, treatment, a special outstanding section for families - you name it, it is here. This book I know will further not only consumer's knowlege of the BPD but it is helpful for families as well. I believe clinicians will learn a great deal in regards to treatment.
This book is easily the best book out there for the BPD consumer. It is also the best book for BPD families and those that love the people who suffer this very painful disorder. The family section reads totally without stigma, is understanding of the consumer and contains information on things you can do to help. "Stop Walking on Eggshells" is a good book and very helpful but it contains some stigma and reads without the heart that this book has. "...Eggshells" just went down a peg in my opinion when this book came out, sorry to say as I advocated for that book for a long time. There is no blaming of the Borderline consumer in "New Hope..."
If you have the BPD or are a family member, this book is priceless. In many cases it is us who have to educate our mental health clinicians in order to be treated correctly. BPD is highly misunderstood in this society. This disorder is treatable and the information is here in this book.

Excellent resource for BPD sufferers, their families/friends
This book takes a more holistic view of BPD than other books on the subject. Topics in the book include diet/nutrition and exercise/spiritual motivation, in addition to the traditional topics of psychotherapy and conventional treatment of BPD.

The text is easy to read and is well organized. In my opinion, it's one of the better sources available on the subject of BPD.

The New Interpreter's Bible: The Twelve Prophets (Volume 7)
Published in Hardcover by Abingdon Press (November, 1996)
Authors: Abingdon Press, Elizabeth Achtemeier, and Frederick J. Murphy
Average review score:

Apocalypse
The New Interpreter's Bible is a twelve-volume series, updating the popular Interpreter's Bible from a few decades ago. There are several key features common to all of the volumes of this series. First, each includes a two-column, double translation of the Biblical text (NIV - New International Version, and NRSV - New Revised Standard Version) arranged by topical unit or story. Then, they provide commentaries that look at the passages as a whole, as well as verse-by-verse. Third, interesting Reflection pieces that relate the passages to each other, to history, and to current concerns occur at the conclusion of each passage. Fourth, introductory articles for each book are provided that discuss transmission, historical background, cultural setting, literary concerns, and current scholarship. Finally, there are general articles about the Bible, each Testament, and various types of literature (Narrative, Gospel, Wisdom Literature, etc.) are provided to give general placement and knowledge about the text overall.

The list of contributors, editors, and consultants on the project is a veritable Who's Who of biblical and theological scholarship, representing all major traditions and schools of thought liberal and conservative. Leander Keck, of the Yale Divinity School, is the primary editor of the series.

The volumes were published individually, and can be purchased individually, which is a good thing, given that they are a bit... But for any serious biblical scholar, preacher, student, or enthusiast, they are invaluable.

--Volume VII--

The seventh volume of the New Interpreter's Bible is the volume that introduces the Apocalytic tradition in the Hebrew Scriptures. After an introductory essay concerning Apocalyptic Literature, the volume continues with the books of the major prophet Daniel, the apocryphal additions of Daniel, and the so-called twelve Minor Prophets, and so concludes the Hebrew Scripture/Old Testament section of the series.

In his introductory general article on Apocalyptic Literature, Frederick Murphy of the College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, Massachusetts, looks at the ideas behind Apocalyptic and Revelation traditions. There is more than one strand of tradition in such thinking, and Murphy approaches the task by looking at origins, commonalities, and the differences contained in the writings, both canonical and extracanonical. Murphy devotes some time to looking at texts beyond the scope of the NIB (those writings, such as the Enoch literature and the Apocalypse of Abraham, which didn't even achieve apocryphal status) to create a broader worldview for the context of biblical Apocalyptic literature.

Each of the books is addressed by a different scholar, each providing commentary and reflection material giving insight into historical interpretation as well as new directions for each of the Minor Prophetic works. Perhaps the best known of the Minor Prophets is Jonah, commentary for which is provided by Phyllis Trible of Union Theological Seminary in New York. Trible writes, 'The book of Jonah does not disclose its purpose, and speculation has not secured it. This uncertainty matches the meager knowledge about its origin, date, composition, genre, and setting. Nonetheless, the book offers an abundance of literary treasures, theological complexities, and hermeneutical possibilities.'

The additions to Daniel are called apocryphal because their status is not canonically clear within the Christian tradition. They are not contained in the official canon of the Hebrew scripture, and so Protestant tradition has tended to leave the books out of the Old Testament. However, these texts were included in the Septuagint, the primary Greek translation of the Hebrew scriptures in the ancient world, and so the Roman Catholic and the Orthodox churches consider the texts canonical.

High praise goes to the general editorial staff for working with such strong authors/scholars, that their work fits together well as part of this set while retaining their individual characteristics (much like the writers of the Bible itself!).

The Best of the Best
Most people understand that the study of Scripture is an enormous task; and that there is a considerable theological heritage to even the most benign of passages. Unfortunately, it is sometimes difficult to translate that understanding into a willingness to genuinely delve into the vast pool of material out there. In addition, it's hard to know who to trust.

You can trust the New Interpreter's Bible series. All of the scholars who contributed are the best in their field. In addition, the layout (which includes two complete translations - the NIV and the NRSV) is conducive to both scholarly and spiritual study of the texts.

Each text is broken down into discret units (i.e. the Tower of Babel) followed by general commentary on the passage, verse by vers analysis of key issues, and then an overview of study questions. The commentators address issues of authorship, historical setting, translation, theological history, and personal application. In addition, they graciously point to excellent sources for further reading.

Speaking as a pastor, it is my strong opinion that every English-speaking Christian who is serious about Bible study should own the complete set.

The BEST Bible commentary available.
I can't believe that no one has written an online review of this book yet! The NIB is the best Bible commentary written. If you are serious about scholarly study of the Bible, you need to buy the entire series. It is expensive to buy 12 volumes at $60-70 each, even if you save 30% through amazon.com like I did ;). In that case, check with your church or library. As a fall-back try Harper's or Jerome's for single volume commentaries. If at all possible, buy the NIB. Forget the earlier version of the IB.

The NIB is the definitive standard for serious Bible scholarship.

New Moon Sports: What Sports Can Do for You and What You Can Do With Sports
Published in Library Binding by Crown Pub (August, 1999)
Authors: New Moon Books Girls Editorial Board, Lauren Calhoun, Ashley Cofell, Morgan Fykes, Katie Hedberg, Elizabeth Larsson, Priscilla Mendoza, Julia Peters-Axtell, Caitlin Stern, and New Moon Girl's Editorial Board
Average review score:

An introduction to girls and their sports dreams
"New Moon" magazine is devoted to helping girls discover their hopes and dreams. It always has an editorial board of girls ages ten to fourteen from across the country (although it is put together here in Duluth), which certainly ensures that the perspective accurately reflects the target audience. "New Moon Sports" covers why sports are good for girls, the benefits of competition, a brief history of women in sports, and information about how to keep your body healthy. Some of the more interesting features are a look at sports myths (e.g., boys are better at sports than girls), interviews with famous athletes (Bonnie Blair and Cathy Rigby), helpful tips (e.g., Hot Soccer Tips), and lots of suggestions as to what girls can do in terms of sports. Consequently, this is a valuable introductory text. There is not a lot of depth to the information presented herein, but what is here is on valuable and on target. There are also numerous sources for additional information where girls can easily go to find out more about whatever topic interests them, whether it is body image, a particular sport, or a favorite athlete. Other equally worthwhile books from "New Moon" focus on friendship, money, and writing.

two thumbs up!
This book was written by girls just like you. It will make you laugh, smile and even cry. But most of all it will give you a wonderful sense of self confidence and help you reach out and make friends. I highly reccomend it, that is, if you want to be sure of yourself in friendships, self confident and happy with your friends. I give it a big smile and two thumbs up!

A heartfelt book dealing with issues about girls in sports
I'm a girl editor for this book. I feel that there is not enough writing out there by girls for girls. This book is just that:by girls and for girls. I feel that girls and sports mix wonderfully. They let you free to jump, kick and just be you. They let your spirit free. You don't have to worry about getting dirty(not that you have to worry anyway) and you can let passion fly. This should be known by all girls. All girls should know the adrenaline rush in jumping into a pool or surfing or kicking a ball to a teammate. This book shows you, you can go out there and get the rush of feeling strong and being part of something bigger than just you. This book shows you girls and women who are great athletes or just girls who enjoy sports. It gives you some advice on how to get started in a sport and helps you find your particular sport made just for you. I know that I have put my heart into this book for all girlkind and hope I have opened girls eyes to the wonderful opportunities they have in sports and how they can take hold of those opportunities and fly. This book is only one in a series of books written by me and seven other girls as a source for girls and their dreams. We want girls to know that they can pursue anything they want. If you have an opportunity, take it. If you have a passion, follow it. Please, disregard my rating and rate it for yourself.

This book was really great like the rest in the Spy Girl series! Elizabeth Cage uses witty dialouge and descriptions so we can really visualize the characters. I recomend this book to teenage girls who love adventure, action, and fashion. Way cool!

"'Nobody does it better" is a fun filled, action packed book
The series title of this book may make you think that its for younger kids, but when you get into it, its action packed! Each girl in the book has their own unique personality, and its totally realistic. The book was perfectly worded, especially for a teen-aged reader. "Nobody Does it Better" was an awesome book, and I think that its an excellant book to buy!

I read the other Spy Girl Books and this one is truly BEST!!
